Don’t Try and Fight the Bear — A Smarter Way to Play the Game admin, June 9, 2025June 9, 2025 Don’t Try and Fight the Bear — A Smarter Way to Play the Game and become the winner without bloodshed and anger and frustration post by Peter Hanley coachhanley.com Have you ever felt completely powerless in a situation? Like the deck was stacked against you — and no matter what you said or did, you simply couldn’t win? It’s a frustrating, even painful feeling. I’ve been there. We all have. And too often, when we face those moments, the temptation is to fight. To push back. To demand fairness. But here’s something I’ve learned the hard way:Sometimes the “enemy” is too big to fight. And trying only drains your energy. That’s why I say — don’t try and fight the bear. When the Fight Isn’t Worth It Let’s start with a simple truth: There are forces in life you cannot control — and no amount of effort will change them. Take Google, for example. Google controls the web. They control what ranks. Plus they control what’s seen and what’s buried. They can rewrite the rules of SEO tomorrow — and you’ll have no avenue to appeal. Sure, you can protest in your mind. You can shout on forums. You can rage at their algorithm updates. But will it change anything? No. The bear doesn’t care. The Sports Lesson — Arguing With the Umpire The same lesson applies in sports. We’ve all seen it:An athlete gets a bad call from the umpire or referee. Emotions boil over. The player argues furiously. But guess what? The call never changes. The umpire’s decision is final. In fact, fighting the call usually makes things worse — it distracts the player, invites penalties, and damages focus. Again — the bear doesn’t care. The David and Goliath Myth Now, you might be thinking:“But what about the story of David and Goliath? The little guy CAN win!” Sure — occasionally, when the odds are right and the strategy is brilliant, the underdog pulls off a victory. But here’s the key: David picked the right fight, at the right time, with the right tools. Most of us, when reacting emotionally to a huge power imbalance, aren’t doing any of those things. Blindly charging at Goliath — or the bear — is a recipe for failure. When Equals Fight — That’s Different Now, here’s where it gets interesting. When two players are equal or close in power, strategy matters deeply. That’s where you look for advantage: a. A better planb. Smarter executionc. Greater persistenced. Sharper tools And in those cases, the fight can be fair — and even winnable. Look at what’s happening in the world stage right now.Donald Trump — arguably the world’s most powerful political figure — and Elon Musk — one of the richest men in history — are entering the public arena together. Anything can happen. The balance of power in media, politics, and business may shift dramatically. But why? Because these are players on a similar level. They can affect outcomes. They can challenge each other. That’s where a fight can be worth it. Where to Take Your Energy Instead So here’s my advice — drawn from years in marketing, business, and life: When the bear is too big, don’t fight it.👉 When the umpire’s call won’t change, move on.👉 When the algorithm isn’t yours to control, adapt. Instead, take your emotional energy — your creativity, focus, and drive — and put it where it can do good: ✅ Build better content.✅ Find new opportunities.✅ Connect with your audience.✅ Innovate in ways the “bear” can’t stop.
