In my 50 years of business, I’ve seen many technologies promise to save time, but I’ve rarely seen one as capable of “stabbing you in the back” as a poorly configured AI. As we navigate the digital landscape of 2026, we are no longer in the “honeymoon phase” of Artificial Intelligence. The novelty has worn off, and the reality of AI Hallucinations is starting to hit the bottom lines of businesses across the globe.

You might think your chatbot is a helpful digital assistant, but if it’s built on a generic public model without proper “grounding,” it may be a ticking reputational time bomb.


The Anatomy of a Hallucination: Why AI “Lies”

To understand the risk, we must first understand the mechanism. Specifically, most AI models are designed to be “agreeable” and “fluent.” They are trained to predict the next most likely word in a sentence based on patterns. However, they do not naturally have a “fact-checking” organ.
